GED
(General Education Diploma)
The Journey: Career Pathfinder & GED
Program
The GED program is for students who have decided that
school was not for them. A GED is an alternative to a
diploma and is sometimes a last chance. Our classes will
prepare you for the GED exam. Students are tutored in
math, reading, writing, science and social studies. When
all subjects are mastered, Compass can register students
for the exam.
The GED preparation program begins in late September and
concludes at the end of May. During enrollment, students
take the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) test to
determine their education level and begin working with
the GED instructor and a Vocational Coach to determine
career interests and to develop a post secondary school
and employment plan. Students receive GED
preparation and instruction four afternoons a week for
two hours each afternoon. In addition, students receive
one hour of vocational coaching each day in order to
create a post secondary education and employment plan.
When the student is
ready to take the GED test, Compass refers them to North
Shore Community College for test registration and
examination. After successful achievement of the GED,
Compass continues to provide career services to each
youth until he/she is employed or enrolled in a post
secondary education or advanced training program.
