Action and for-profit join
in job training
By RICHARD GAINES, Staff writer. This article appeared on page one of the Gloucester Daily Times on May 15, 2003
Action, Inc., Cape Ann's anti-poverty agency, yesterday announced a partnership with a computer-savvy, for-profit job training company to expand its reach to the unemployed.
The arrangement will give Action's clients access to training on hardware and software from Microsoft, Sun, Cisco, Novell, CompTia and CIW. The trainers and job placement will be provided by Millennium Training Institute.
Millennium, a four-year-old Woburn company, which also has offices in Boston and Taunton, trains between 400-700 job seekers a year.
Action, Inc., runs job training from its offices in Brown's Mall and placed more than 160 Cape Ann residents last year, said Rona Resnick, its director of employment and training.
"This is a win-win for everybody," said Kevin O'Brien, Millennium's vice president and a managing partner. "We can deliver product for Action, and they can help us with networking."
The partnership opens the Cape Ann market to Millennium, which derives revenues from a variety of federal and state job training programs, as does Action.
Resnick said, "Action is thrilled to partner with Millennium. It's an unusual partnership, a non-profit and a for-profit. But it's going to be good for both partners and especially for the clients of both who now can use the larger combined resources to find appropriate jobs.
"They are strong in IT and can bring us more courses and more software. We had limited computer capabilities, but are strong in counseling with Patty Bongiorno (Action's job developer) and follow-up and case management," Resnick said.
Action and Millennium announced an open house on June 10 to introduce the more muscular job training and placement operations to Cape Ann. It will be held at Action's offices in Brown's Mall beginning at 10 a.m.
At that time, the partners will introduce training programs in office and medical office administration, medical terminology, medical billing, Windows 2000, Outlook 2000, Microsoft Word and Excel 2000, Powerpoint and career readiness.
